Information for Caretaker, Provider, or Personal Care Assistance

The roles of caregivers, providers, or personal care assistants vary by need and include both direct and indirect services. Direct services can include provision of personal care such as helping with bathing, grooming, dressing, toileting or health care tasks such as catheter care, giving injections, or monitoring medications, checking and monitoring, continuous supervision, regular checking, or telephone monitoring. Indirect tasks include locating services, coordinating service use, monitoring services, or advocacy. Household tasks include cooking, cleaning, shopping, money management, and transportation to medical appointments or daycare programs. Assistance can be provided by family, friends, a personal care assistant the individual with a disability hires or a home health care agency. Assistance can be provided on a paid or non-paid basis or by using a combination of both methods.
